Negotiations and Love Songs

This morning I went out and did some behind the scenes work at a farm that does some spelling and pre-training services here in my local area.  It was about a 40 minute drive which was a breeze.  They had a nice little horse relaxing in the paddock too, who I caught up with and had a cuddle with.  I will tell you that he remembers me.

I think it's more fun having company on my photoshoots. I like having someone who can help me make the horse's head twist and turn the way I want it too.   Still.. When company takes the form of my children there is more negotiation being entered into than I prefer however I'm sure The Love Horse missed "The Lovely Jessica" who helped on props last time.  She's great with the horses and they respond to her. She also likes it because it is one of her pocket money jobs and makes her feel on a level with Heath, because he earns pocket money by mowing the lawn.

Incidentally, on the subject of negotiation, I came across this today when I arrived back home.  Sometimes I feel negotiation is a tricky task.  How much can you stand your ground without being declared dogmatic and immoveable?  And does too much negotiation make you wishy washy and not good at setting boundaries?

With my mare due to arrive next week however, and seeing as I've been working a gelding for a couple of months, this made me smile.  They are dead right about those browbands and bandages.......

"Training a mare teaches you that, in the first instance, you're far better off asking nicely for things than assuming you'll get what you demand.  It will also improve your negotiation skills 10-fold, opening up a whole new world of career options, from mediator to UN peace envoy
You can put a mare in pink bandages and pretty shiny browbands.
Mares don't pull the toggle on your waterproof jacket and ping it back at you for entertainment value, either.  They have a clear sense of personal space - and would politely request that you remember this.

Only mares can go vertical both ways.  That's what we call balance and athleticism.

Geldings are generally up for a cuddle.  Mares make you work harder for any affection.  Rather like having a cat instead of a dog.  Geldings are every man's best friend.  Mares are more selective.  You have to earn it.
The Love Horse.  Lankan Rupee.

You got me..   Again it was a black horse that caught my eye.  This is a Denman colt (Rosmarino) who recently sold as Lot 31 for $280,000 at the recent January 2014 Magic Million yearling sale.  Robbie Laing bought him from the Amarina Farm draft.  He's been broken in, had a jump out and is apparently doing everything right.  Lovely colt.  Cuddly as well.
This AquaCiser water walker is different to the one designed and used by Peter Clarke of Willowood Equicentre in Murchison.  Peter's design and concept has of course been made famous by the great Black Caviar and his walker features a solid centre.
